We all do this from time to time. Actually it is not a spelling issue since
the etymology of the two terms does differ. In reality these are two
different terms that apply to the same thing. These synonyms just happen to
be very close in spelling and if you go far enough back up the etymology
tree, it converges.

There are a lot of differences between British, Australian, and American
usages. One company that I worked for gave us all a list of terms and the
American equivalents so that we could understand our British engineering
counterparts. Without it, I would never have known that a spanner was the
same as a wrench.
