Local youth orchestra: our original section this year was two guys, two
girls. One of the guys has since dropped out and has been replaced by a
girl. Flute section is four females (although we did have a male until last
year); one female trumpet player. We also had a female trombonist last
year. Haven't had any male oboe players for a while (never in my 5 years in
the orchestra, but I do know one male ex-player) and we did have a male
bassoonist last year.

I actually have a major problem with Andrew's (the clarinettist that dropped
out of the orchestra) attitude - every two years, everyone has to
re-audition. He said before the auditions that if he wasn't principal or
first second, he would leave. Auditions are blind; after my last one, when
I pulled off a shocker and went from stand-in principal (the principal took
off 3/4 of the way through the year) to 4th chair, I figured that my best
course of action was just to sit and do the best I could. I did all the
bass playing and had a lot of fun. Well, this year, I worked pretty hard
and landed co-principal. Andrew obviously didn't work and was sitting
fourth. He came to one rehearsal then quit. In my view, that's not a good
ethic. So you learnt the hard way that practice is a necessity not a
luxury, and you can't take anything for granted. But is quitting going to
solve anything?
