Subj: [kl] Gender bias - survey?
Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 08:52:32 -0400

This discussion interests me, since while I have often heard that this
exists, it seems that I always play with groups that are the exceptions.
(??) Seems unlikely. Maybe everyone is an exception. We are certainly in
a good position to ask that question on this list, and get a good sample
from all over. I'll start with my recent experience:

1) Summer Band, Maine (plays on the green twice a week) Total clarinets
usually 4 to 6. Number of males 3 to 4. (Balance females - duh.) First
chair - male.

2) Community band, central Illinois. Total clarinets 7. Number of males
4. First chair - female.

Gender bias - not observable with these numbers.

I might also note that in both organizations there was at least one male
flute player, and at least one female low brass player.
