The "glass bowl" which I barely remember had a different function. Those
"gas pumps" would pump (by hand) the gas into an elevated, calibrated glass
reservoir, from which you could drain out however much you wanted up to its
10 gal. capacity, if I remember right. So its function was for measuring
the gas, not for determining its quality. Later on, gas pumps had a small
glass dome with a rotating gismo in it, to ascertain that the pump line was
full and that the calibration was likely to be reasonably accurate. But
these were metering pumps operating on a different principle. But you're
right that the existence of a glass sight glass of some sort made possible
all the hype of things like "Blue Sunoco".
