There's an old system in Italy to cut reeds. It isn't "professional" but it
is still used in many bands by the oldest player.

You have to take a coin (we use italic Lit.200) and put it on the tip of
reed. Now you have the arc of the tip and, beneath, the coin reproducing the
arc at the distance you want to cut the reed.
Then you have to take a lighter or a candle and burn the tip of the red
using the coin as "shield" for the part that should remain integral. When it
is burned you can remove it whit the finger and the reed is cut or "burnt".

I've used it several times and it works whit some reed and some not.
