Sounds like my stand partner and I, when we were in high school, as well. We
were first and second chair clarinet in the concert band. Our band director
suggested we both pick up alto and try out for the jazz ensemble in our
junior year. Both of us picked up the horns, and a week later, we ended up
with the two alto parts in the jazz ensemble, beating out several long-time
sax players who thought they had the spots sewn up.

In the end, the jazz ensemble ended up with a sax section of 5, all of whom
played at *least* three different instruments. It gave us a lot of scope in
choice of music, and the judges loved it when we walked in with a line-up of
horns at each stand.
