Jay: Yes, this is the second most popular myth just after crushed fibers.
I recall attending a master class given by Kenneth Grant and Robert DeLutis of
the RPO in which Ken Grant stressed the importance of physical conditioning as
an aid to clarinet performance. To demonstrate, he jumped up on stage front and
proceeded to do a couple dozen rapid push-ups on his fingertips, withdrawing one
finger at a time. He works out a couple times a week. I'd be hard pressed to
stereotype this world class clarinet player. He is impressive.
