I have run into this mentality in the last few years. I have had parents
come up to expressing an appreciation that there son had a chance to see a
man play the Clarinet, because the popular believe is that it is a "sissy"
instrument. I did not experience this in my youth. If anyone thought this
I didn't hear about. The fact that I could out run and out weight lift
most of my pears may have had something to do with it, though.

Personally, I have the type of personality that just doesn't care what
other people think about the instrument or instruments I choose to play.
My only concern has been focused on the quality of my playing. You will
always have to deal with peoples prejudices until the day you die. And all
of the government rules and regulations will not have any affect on the
thoughts and attitudes of the vast majority of the people in World. You
need to ask yourself one question, "Do I enjoy this?". If the answer is
yes then go for it. Be kind to the ones who think you're weird or
different. And if all else fails, get a set of weights and work out.

Actually, that's odd to me - when I was in high school, and in college, the
ratio of female to male in our clarinet sections was approximately 1:1. No
one thought that clarinet was a "girl" instrument at all.

Remember to impress upon them that clarinet is not just for girls. There
are
only three of us in FHS's Band, as opposed to 20 some odd girls. We are
looked down upon by some of the other sections, and my trombone section
considers me a traitor :P
