Wow! I didn't know this. I didn't know I've been ruining reeds for the last
forty five years. Maybe I'll sell all of them on eBay, my soprano sax, clarinet,
alto, tenor and bari sax trimmers.

If the fibers are pinched together at the tip end, wouldn't that be good?
Closing the pores or those little tubes we call the fibers is what I've been
taught to do. Sealing the vamp seems to retard the accumulation of those solids
that are in everyone's saliva--and contribute to the reed's decline.

Yes, I also sand reed tips. I do this on bass sax and BBb contra-bass clarinet.
That works too for me.

All I can say, Adam, is have you tried a reed trimmer?
