<><> I would like to comment on the matter of reed trimmers vs
sand paper [....] I think some teachers delight in promulgating
[....]

<hmmm> I don't agree that teachers are out to cause mischief, but
at my own lesson this week, I got myself caught in a cycle of squeaking
whenever I attacked Bb-on-the-staff. My instructor took my reed from me
and tested both edges and then scraped it a bit on one side. "There!"
she told me, "this should fix it."
Guess what? I still squeaked. Tried another reed. Same problem.
It seems to me that any talk of adjusting a student's reed is fruitless
until the student can produce the same tone repeatedly. It doesn't seem
sensible (to me) to offer an 'excuse' to a student until the explanation
is likely to prove true. Until then, it's just another distraction.

Cheers,
Bill
