Personally, I think that any music reading skills can only be a positive
to the learning experience. It certainly makes it easier on the teacher!
Younger kids also have a faster learning speed than adults so any music
training that goes on before they get into the band program is a plus.

As far as breaking bad habits, generally I will illustrate the correct
way for them and then have them repeat the correct way for several times in a
row. Also, I make a mental note and write them some exercises in their
notebooks for the next week. Then when I review last week's assignment
before the beginning of the lesson, I will check on the specific problem.
