Thank you for your comments. They are much appreciated, (he said, as he
angrily looks at the computer, red faced, and threatening to use the
computer for a boat anchor (chuckle)) . In the case of one of these
students I don't think that any amount of time would have done any good.
Taking over other peoples students has been a real challenge. Your
suggestions however, have been very helpful. I'll keep you posted on my
progress.
You must excuse me now, I have to go fishing...

There's more I could think of, but this is already far more than you asked
for (indeed you didn't really ask for any reaction or input), and I run the
risk of igniting the same reaction in you that I described in my first
paragraph (certainly not my intent). Teaching takes patience and a
long-range view of students' accomplishments. Good luck with these
pedagogical adoptees.
