Patty: IMHO it is of enormous benefit to have piano experience prior to undertaking
any new instrument. In my humble opinion, too, it lies largely in the area of sight
reading and general familiarity with music notation. It is my belief that in taking
up another instrument there may be problems arise but they are independent of piano
experience. I remember my own and they were generally resolved in the first 4-6
lessons. I think the ability or inability to drop bad habits lies with the individual
student and his/her mindset. We are all different.
