In the United States, one may even receive scholorships for college. I
don't really know how common those are, but they help to pay for a portion
of the college (originally intended for the financially challenged... now
universities, etc., use the percentage of financially aided students as a
selling point...). They can range from National Merit Scholorships (a
national program designed to help the best and brightest students) to
racially selective scholorships (I think this was originally intended to
counteract prejudices... America still has many groups and individuals that
believe their race is the supreme one... *sigh*). Also, for some states
(Texas, at least) one can be automatically accepted to a PUBLIC, i.e.
state-run, college if (s)he is in the top ten percent of her/his class. I
just said that because that is the only way I know there are indeed state
funded schools, hehe:).

That is not true. Most schools have varying degrees of public funding, and
most public universities are not all that expensive - or even free in some
states.
