I've been following this thread for a while now, and I have something to say
on the subject. I don't believe that those that play for the only reason
that it's what they've done should continue. Lots of people in my band are
like that, and it makes me upset. They have talent after years of practice
and yet they'd rather not study for this or that and continue to advance
simply be playing when they are made to play. I've rarely, if ever, played
my clarinet in class. In class I'm a trombonist. Sure, my directors support
me (we have 3) and are happy I've chosen another instrument, but the fact
remains that I have spent my money, my time, and my brain power on learning
another instrument. Clarinet isn't always easy, no denying that, and if I
did, you wouldn't believe me, but it is fun. If you don't want to play,
don't.
