Schools are run by locally elected school boards in the US. Therefore
one sees so many variations on standards. Some federal guidelines must
be met, as well as some form the state level.
Colorado has compulsory education from age 6 thru 16. Our school
district has year-round school thru middle school which consists of four
9 week sessions with 3 wks off between, plus winter break. We can't
call it Christmas vacation. Try and schedule private music students
around five different school calendars !!

A neighboring rural county has school for four long days per week because
there is no bus service and it saves driving time for parents. Distances
to school can be over 40 miles- 66 Km.
