Sorry to intrude on this thread with my vitriolic judgement of today's
pop music but it never ceases to amaze me how it is construed to contain
any musicality whatever. Now I feel purged, at least for today.

Don, you and I are singing the same tune in that regard!
Absolutely for sure!

I've already posted -- in one of the news groups or lists -- about
my music adventures with my daughter (12 yrs old). I turned off the
local rock/rap station and started playing Smetna, Prokofiev, Miriam
Makeeba, Edith Piaf, Louis Armstrong, Hildegard von Bingen, etc.
Eventually she started borrowing my CDs and leaving the radio off.
I have continued this strategy, and lo and behold, she asked for
voice lessons. Right now, I'm not sure if she's going to stick with it,
but the instructor is using a wise strategy (IMO). She asks my daughter
to bring her favorite pop CD with her. Then she uses her keyboard to
show my daughter where C (or whatever note) really is, and then she
says, "Let's see what this song would sound like if we sing it
together." Of course, when she 'helps' my daughter find C, it's really
and truly C with some diaphragm and resonance in it, not almost-C
through the nose.

....anyway, the reason that I've been listening to this thread and
making my own comments is that, so far, it isn't clear if my daughter
has the basic motivation to really practice outside the class room. And
the thought tat I always return to is: There has to be some basic
pleasure right from the beginning -- and if it has to, diligent practice
should come later.
I practice on my clarinet for several hours each day (with frequent
breaks because my chops poop out). I'm hoping that eventually practice
will begin to look attractive to my daughter also.

.....well, enough rambling

Cheers,
Bill
