This is a subjest that affects me often as I am usually hired to play =
bass clarinet.

Every orchestra in the SF Bay Area has established its own doubling =
scale as an aspect of its collective bargaining agreement and the rate =
varies considerably.

In the SF Opera Bass clarinet is considered a doubling instrument and =
one receives 25% overscale whether or not he is actually playing =
clarinet too!

The San Francisco Symphony pays %25 for the first double and 10% for =
additional doubles. One flaw I see in their contract is this. If your =
part calls for Bass clarinet and clarinet , but you don't play the =
double in the service you don't get paid the double. Naturally you have =
practiced both parts, schlepped both instruments and fully expect to =
play both in the rehearsal. Is this right? NO!

The most generous doubling comes from the film score recording. You are =
paid 50% for the first double and %20 for every double after that. I =
usually play the bass clarinet/contra bass clarinet chair at Skywalker =
studios. Generally in one session I can expect to play Bass clarinet, =
BBb Contra (%50), EEb contra (%20), clarinet (%20). In one really =
unusual session "Mars Attacks!" I also played Eb soprano clarinet. I =
know why a lot of the studio musicians in LA drive Beamers!

On the low end is the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. Great =
musical experience - horrible pay and no pay for doubles.

All of the other orchestras around here pay from %15 to %10 for doubles.
