rules One of the big distinctions between amateur pits and professional or
semi-professional pits is giving doubling fees. Most unions (USA) require
20% over base pay for the first double (second instrument). The second
double (third horn) gives the player 15% more of base pay. All additional
doubles pay the player 10% per horn. If a woodwind player plays five
instruments, they receive base plus 20, plus 15, plus 10, plus 10 (base
plus 55% of base pay). Bass saxophone is usually considered an instrument
of cartage, just like the harpist or a percussionist who must bring in a
ton of stuff.

I once played with an Orchestra that the Contractor (string player) was
paying doubling for Bb and A Clarinet - I KID YOU NOT.
Who was I to argue..... ;)

There's now on my page a really good performance (live) of the Bartok
Contrasts with a then 17 yr old former Winner of the ICA competition (at
16). Worth a good listen - amazing (very, very much like the Drucker
recording of it at 19 - his 1st mvt cadenza is spectacular) . I'm featuring
some former students there too. For those who have never heard that work,
you're in for a real treat - very cool work.
