Subj: [kl] dyslexia -- 'talking' about music
Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 07:33:26 -0400

I've been talking in email with someone about fingering & notes and
stuff. As always, it became difficult without a standard terminology to
say exactly what I wanted to say.
Then the discussion of dyslexia and left brain vs right brain made
me realize that probably there is a *reason* why there's no standard
terminology. There certainly could be one, I think, if ICA or the major
manufacturers invested the considerable resources and effort that would
be needed to publicize it.
And the reason, of course, is that music uses different thought
channels than written language does. Therefore talented musicians don't
see the considerable effort of promulgating a standard terminology as
being relevant.
Admittedly, the varied and changing designs of clarinets add to the
language difficulties; but underneath it all, I think there exists a
basic distaste for the 'crippling' of music that would occur (would it?)
if intuitive descriptions were replaced by formal terminology.

....anyway, that's my thought, even though it obviously puts me on
the wrong side of the musical fence. Not that I'm complaining, because
during the last few days I've managed to hit within 40 cycles of C#+2
(C-sharp-two-leger-lines-above-the-staff). So I'm making a little
progress.

Cheers,
Bill
