I used to do the same thing. The device was called "The Gomez Tool." It
seemed to make the reeds vibrate a little better if they were kind of
dead. As I recall, they produced a buzzy, nasal sound. I was young and
naive, and fell for a lot of fads. (I even wore a powder blue leasure
suit!)
