Kevin,
I am surprised that you haven't gotten more answers, guess other topics
are HOT.
I know that several other teachers on this list use the register slurs
much the same way. And i hope some others will comment.
btw, Gene, i make little comment about voicing, because most of the
students and players i see tend to make too much change, and will average
to useable levels when intending no change, especially on the beginning
level.

First thing to check is breath support & air speed.
For the finger coordination, play the same finger combinations without
register key
(throat Bb to C below, minor 7th). When that is smooth play the original
interval, Bb to
clarion G. Also, play the interval from the G to Bb, then play Bb to G.

It seems that the description has gotten scrambled passing through to
you.
First, since you included your mailing address, I am sending a copy of
the 'Register slurs' exercise I use with my students and when I coach
workshops as a tool for discovering and refining good tone quality.
Finger and play low A ( t123/12), with a full rich sound.
While the student plays this
note, teacher can press register key, and the E (top space treble clef, a
12th higher than 1st note) will sound.

There will be a basic embouchure 'setting' that will work best for all
registers, and the only change for the low A to clarion E will be the tip
of the thumb pressing the register
key.=====
The purpose of having someone else press the register key is that the
player will not make air or embouchure changes to 'help' the note to
speak.
========IF breath support is good, but upper note is flat and loud, bring
clarinet closer to body without changing head position. Then try
slightly more or less mouthpiece and more or less muscle support around
mouthpiece. (instruction, 'make a vertical or tall o-shape' with your
mouth often helps.)
If the A and E are secure, open the next register 'key' lifting the
first(pointer) finger in the left hand. When all is well, that will
sound a C# (two ledger lines above the staff).
The notes from low A to low D, with register keys, will play in 3
registers. These are
regular fingerings for the altissimo. Below A and Eb,E,F are fingerings
for just 2
registers.
Also these slurs work going up only, and for acoustic reasons need
legato tongue when going from upper to lower note in the register slur
sequence.
