I'm not Tony Pay, sorry:-). But I remember the late George C. Scott
going on some TV talk show way back when and reciting the lyrics to
1940s songs...because the songs of the Sixties and Seventies were
ostensibly drek, and the "old standards" were supposed to be classics of
some mythic Golden Age. You had to hear Scott, in that gravelly and
unforgettable voice, declaiming the lyrics to "Three Little Fishies ina
iddy-biddy poo'" and "Mairsy Doats" like he was reciting poetry by Byron
or Shelley. Let's say every lyricist back then was not Ira Gershwin....

And of course my parents had a party record from the 1940s called "She
has freckles on her butt, she is nice." Do you think I could make this
up?? Plus the standard stuff like Vaughn Monroe singing "Ghost Riders
in the Sky" which Mickey Katz brilliantly spoofed as "Borscht Riders in
the Sky," plus the usual collection of Spike Jones, complete with
"Cocktails for Two" sung to the accompaniment of cowbells and barking
dogs.

Even the great songs could be parodied. Lenny Bruce used to do a bit
involving "Old Man River" which was totally un-PC (as was everything
that man did), and involved correcting someone's pronunciation. "No,
no, not 'river,' RIBBER, RIBBER!"
