Hi all!
I am briefly delurking because this discussion of the MTI site has
aroused my interest. I too have visited this site several times in
the past, and have found the info for the reed books to be vastly
incorrect. The correct instrumentation for West Side Story (for
example) is as follows:
Reed 1: flute, picc, clar, alto sax, bass clar (one piece only;
usually switches with reed 4 for the flute part)
Reed 2: Bb clar, Eb clar, bass clar
Reed 3 (my book!): oboe, Eng hn, flute, picc, clar, bass clar,
tenor sax, bari sax
Reed 4: flute, picc, clar, bass clar, sop sax, bass sax
Reed 5: bassoon

BTW, I heard a story that the reason that two of the books don't
really double was because Bernstein had a couple of friends in mind
for the first run of the show, and they weren't doublers... also, that
there are no viola parts (only 8 violins, incl divisis, and 4 celli)
because he was upset with his violists at the time that the show was
written! Can anyone else vouch for these stories?

P.S. sorry for the tangent... back to lurking I go...

Terry Halvorson
