Music, poetry and mathematics share a common ground. All three are strongly
based in the recognition of, and/or search for, abstract patterns. Thus a
person with an interest in one of these three is likely to be interested in
at least one other. Our society perceives mathematics and poetry as
inaccessible and therefore labels them as academic. Music, particularly
popular music, is not regarded as inaccessible and so musicians per se are
not generally regarded as academics. However, because of the common ground,
we might expect a strong correlation between musical success and "academic"
success. This is not necessarily a causal relationship.

That said, my grand-daughter's primary (elementary?) school was teaching
keyboards with the aim of improving maths results.
