Mr. Johnson -

My attempts to follow your "judges" suggestion leads me to believe that you
are not the only non-clarinet playing person on the scene.

However, the question of an alternate fingering (if there is one) for this
easy interval is really irrelevant. My student days are too far in the past
for me to remember any problems in this area. If your students are fairly
young, their left hands may not be covering the holes cleanly or they may
not be voicing the G correctly.

In my student days, I don't recall much discussion of voicing, but when I
resumed studying last year, my teacher noted that some of my tonal and
technique problems were due to the fact that my throat and tongue positions
were often not appropriate for the passage at hand. By correcting this
"voicing" problem many of these problems have cleared up.

As has been mentioned on this list by some of our experts, you have to
"think" or hear the note in your head before playing the interval to make it
easier to play. (Sort of Music Man/Professor Harold Hill technique. This
might help explain the concept to your students.)

I'm sure that you will get more and better suggestion from the more learned
Klarinet Listers.

Subject: [kl] clarinet register exercise

I am a non-clarinet playing band director in need of help with some advice
that my solo/ensemble contest judge gave me.

My clarinet players were having trouble getting from throat tone Bb to the
G above that. The G would always speak, but nearly a split second later
than the soloist wanted it to respond.

My judge told me to have the student play a regular D and have the student
play two overtones above that using the same fingering. By players are
trying in lessons, but we can't get anything but the D to speak. I know
this exercise works something with the direction of air, but I need help in
how to apply and work this exercise. Thanks!!
