My son, alas, became a "brasshole" . I can still remember the time he
arrived at his lesson without "Charlie" (his trumpet). He wanted to just go
home, but I insisted he go on in and pay his teacher and tell him that he had
forgotten the trumpet. I offered to run back home to get it so he could have
30 out of his 60 minutes. His trumpet teacher told me not to bother that
they would have the lesson without it.
I was curious to find out what they did for a whole hour when he came out.
It ended up being a very motivating lesson for him. His teacher took out
some CDs and solo and orchestral music and had him follow along on the
scores. They also worked on music theory. After he finished the lesson he
couldn't wait to get home and practice! I think it was money well spent.
He has been playing 2 1/2 years now and made the 2nd chair trumpet in All
State Honors Band (middle school) and auditioned and made a Youth Orchestra
in a nearby town that practices every Saturday afternoon for 2 and a half
hours. I have never had to ask him to practice. When he first started he
would practice by muting the tv during ads to practice.
I guess what I am saying is that when one is resourceful a good lesson could
happen even in the absence of one's instrument.
Just a comment.
