Michael, do you study with a private clarinet teacher? Is there a
professional orchestra or chamber music outlet near you (I don't know where
you live)? The most important things for you right now are to hear good
clarinet playing and to have someone who plays well give you feedback about
the sounds you're producing. To accomplish your "wish to improve" your
sound, you need some fairly clear idea of what is wrong with it that needs
improvement. Certainly, just taking the next reed from the box and plunking
it on the mouthpiece (as you've said yourself) won't give you any
consistency. But choosing good reeds involves making judgments about whether
or not the reed helps you produce the sound you want. Hence you need to have
a sound in mind that you want to produce. In a way, it isn't choosing good
reeds that turns out to be the fundamental problem, its choosing good
sounds.
