If a teachers saw that there teaching was like any other job, then they
would probably cancel less. I have recently assumed a number of students
from two different teachers at one of the places that I teach at. The
students told me that they might get 2 lessons a month. It took them
almost four weeks before they began to believe that I was actually going to
be there when they arrived. My point is that we must be very selective
about the reasons we give for skipping a lesson. When working at a regular
job, you would not call in and say, I'm sorry but my aunt just arrived, so
I can't come in for the next two days.

Of course there are emergencies that come, up but a student needs to know
that you are committed to them, and making sure your there on a regular
basis, is one way of showing that commitment. There are many times that I
feel like calling in because of some family issues, but I felt the same way
at my previous jobs.

No, it means that in the life of a family, things can happen. Remember your
statement when you have to cancel a lesson. I have certainly had my
daughters piano and clarinet lessons canceled, and you can believe that
their teachers thought that whatever the reason, it was vital for that
lesson the be canceled.
