It's very possible to have that type of result, especially if it's
someone with Dave's level of ability. I, too, have had quick results
like that when somone studied with a "babysitter" (excellent
description!) A big part of my job is giving the type of clinics
described by several of you, and there are times when a few simple
corrections make a tremendous difference. As an example of a quick fix:
one teacher in this area has her students play with their heads down,
blowing directly into the instrument as if they had their head up and
the clarinet straight out. In order to try to give them some semblence
of control, they play super hard reeds which I couldn't get much sound
out of, at least not on that mouthpiece. After being told some basics,
such as "keep your head up, clarinet down, and use a reasonable reed/
mouthpiece set-up," they sound much better. (BTW, I work with these
students when they come to me after they graduate, so as not to
interfere with their current teacher. I don't recruit students from
others.) Another teacher, from a different town, taught his students
that the tongue should never touch the reed. During the clinic I gave, I
described how to tongue correctly, and there was marked improvement. I
hear that he now teaches this type of articulation.
BTW, if you ever get time to have a five minute lesson with Dave, do so!
Chris
