I can testify to this. I have an intermediate student whose tone needs
improvement. yesterday, i did just those things with her, and although the
results were not miraculous (she needs a better setup) there was a good deal
of improvement.

I do both. With one student, it is easier for him to understand how I want
him to form the embouchure when I firm my bottom lip, place my forefinger
there and drop my upper teeth and lip around it (opposite of a beginning
sax embouchure, for you music ed. folks)
I also use my mouthpiece and play student horns. It works for me, and gives
me an idea of how well the horn plays, and if it is the student, the horn or
the mouthpiece. I plan to get an alcohol swab and do what David suggests in
his earlier posts so I can get an even better picture.
Just some praise for the list:
I have become a much better teacher as a result of being part of klarinet.
