First I have a question for the other (grin) masterclass/sectional
coaching rehearsing magicians(grin)--Do you play your clarinet for demo,
or do the work without your instrument?
I HAVE to be playing to get the message across. And on the rare lessons
where i do not have my instrument out, i feel very limited.

Hi Anne.
I do both. I can work fine without the instrument, but often play the
students instrument to demonstrate. I use an alcohol swab. That way the
student can see that their own instrument can sound decent, and what to
work towards. That way I don't end up with the student thinking "well it
sounds good on HIS instrument, but what about mine??"
Again - don't get me wrong, tone development takes time, some will never,
ever get a great tone no matter what, but to improve a bad sound to a
decent one can be done very quickly.
Often just having the student take in more mouthpiece, and increase the
pressure can make a world of difference - and takes all of a minute or so.
Of course there's no quick fix to get an advanced tone, but to fix a bad
sound often can be just a matter of tweaking just a couple of things.
I've attended Howard Klug's Teacher Masterclasses, and they are designed to
help the teacher diagnose, and quickly fix problems like that. He's the
magician, not me.

Shall I write a book titled "tone, the quick way" ? If I ever do, I'll
have Gary VanCott distribute it.
It would be brief ;)
