I, too, quit piano after three years because I was not motivated to
practice, then picked up clarinet later. I think "ensemble" is the
critical thing for me. I find it so much more fun to play in a group! The
more flexible sound of woodwinds is also appealing. I think I picked up
vibrato almost immediately, and was bending notes in jazz band after only a
few months of playing (I'd been listening to Goodman and Shaw!)
