I am a high school band director as well as a clarinet instructor at a junior
college. If there is a private teacher that I know to be a good teacher, I
will recommend that teacher to my students. Likewise, if there is a teacher
who is not a good teacher and is just taking the students money and not
giving quality instruction, I will not recommend that person. As an example,
there was a local trumpet teacher that did not play as well as my better high
school students. I would not recommend that person because the quality of
instruction the students will receive is questionable. I have heard this
person play and have discussed trumpet with the person and I can tell they do
not have much of a clue. I do not mind if a student takes from one teacher
or another as long as they are receiving quality instruction.

As far as a band director giving his own students private lessons for a fee,
I have mixed feelings about that. I want my students exposed to a different
techer. I had a couple of my high school students inquire about taking
clarinet at the junior college where I teach in a dual credit program the
college offers. I told them if they sign up, I will have them take from the
other woodwind teacher because I want them exposed to a different viewpoint.
If I did teach my own students for a fee, I would certainly not teach them in
teh band hall. I would teach them at my house or at the college. Howeve, I
do know others that teach their own for a fee and they have no problems. It
might be what your local administration and local policies dictate. Algebra
teachers and other academic teachers tutor for money. Interesting topic.
