Ed Wojtowicz wrote about an eBay dealer who offered a box of 10 Vandoren
reeds, described with the astonishing claim,
>I know these retail for up to $50.00. (size 2 1/2).

This dealer also offered,
>seven (7) boxes of Grand Concert reeds. Each box has 4 reeds in it. These
>are professional strength reeds of size 4. A very expensive brand. These
>retail from 100 to 150 dollars."

Ed commented,
>I'll bet there is also a good deal available on that bridge in Brooklyn>

LOL!! Thanks for the new example to help define the word, "chutzpah".

But, on second thought, maybe we should cash in. You know, most of us
probably own hidden treasures we could market for a handsome profit. For
instance, I could get rid of some of these crummy old reeds -- oops, I mean
*part with some of these fascinating vintage reeds* I found in instrument
cases from the flea market. I could advertise my plastic McLean #1 reed as
"rare". Hey, it probably *is* rare (for good reasons, but never mind
those...).

Kidding, of course. Would I sell my McLean #1 on eBay? No way -- I'm
*collecting* it! And of course I wouldn't *wash* it -- Yog forbid! No
tampering with original condition! That's *vintage* dried
yellowish-greenish-brown slime on there. A scientist could probably test the
DNA and determine who played this rare reed. I mean, you never know. It
could turn out that some important musician started as a beginner on my
McLean #1, and then I would own the *only solid proof* (very solid) for
future biographers that this reknowned performer had no concept of hygiene at
age ten. Inquiring minds want to know.
