My husband is a high school band director, who also teaches trombone
privately. Both he and I teach some of his students. We also have students
from other area schools. His school program is kept separate from our studio
work. The students are not required to study with us, and whether they do or
not is not a factor in determining their band grades. We do not teach on
school property, or school time. When students are referred to us, we accept
them on a first-come, first-served basis if we have openings. Most of our
referrals come from local music stores, who maintain lists of all area
private teachers, or through word of mouth. I certainly have no problem with
a band director teaching his/her own students, provided that the students are
free to study with other teachers if they wish. My dad is also a high school
band director, but in a private school that permits him to bring studio
teachers into the building. Many students study with these teachers because
it is so convenient, but they are in no way required to do so. For a band
director to require a student to work with a particular private teacher is, I
think, unethical (especially if it is themselves or a relative), but if they
have observed the work of a particular teacher over time and have been
pleased with the results, I don't have any problem with them recommending
that person to their students. In my case, at least, there would be no way I
could handle all his students anyway, so I'm glad there are other qualified
teachers in the area!
