If you go to www.af.mil/band you can find references to available openings
and audition requirements for the Air Force Field Bands.
Being an ex-Air Force Bandsmen I tend to be partial toward that branch of
service. It has always been my understanding that other services require a
bandsmen to carry a secondary job title along with the position you hold in
the band. In the Air Force your job title is related to the instrument
that you were hired to play, after passing the audition. The requirements
are much more stringent than 20 years ago. It is less uncommon to here of
musicians with Masters in Music playing in these bands.

Keep in mind that in a military band you will often be required to hold an
additional duty related to the operation of the squadron. For example, I
was the drummer in the Air Force Jazz Band at Langley, the NCOIC of that
band, the Duty Sergeant, and Safety NCO. This that if someone tripped over
a case during a rehearsal of the Jazz Ensemble I had to write up an
incidents report and get somebody to clean up the blood at the same time.

Although you have to put up with some of the problems of being in the
military, I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Lot's of good
memories and long lasting friends.
