Kevin--

If you would re-read my post, I stated:

"With the exception of the Air Force, which relys on OJT (On the Job
Training), military bandsmen attend the Armed Forces School of Music ...
following basic training. Yes, all bandsmen attend basic training except
those assigned to the Air Force Band in Washington DC, and the Marine Band
in Washington DC...."

Thanks for the clarification on the other point.

David S. Naden noted:

<<<Please note that in the Army Division Bands in particular) and the
Marines, bandsmen are combat
troops first, and do participate in military exercises. In the Air Force
Bands, bandsmen are musicians first.>>>

I believe that The President's Own (the tippy-top Marine band) dispenses
with both basic training and combat duties. Other than that very select
group, however, I can attest that every Marine -- bandsman, cook or lawyer
-- is assigned to a rifle company -- and a rifle to use in it.
