In the score the composer has written four pages of
introduction (Fr.) that tell you nearly everything you might want
to know about the work, and it creation,
who played it, when, where and why 8 movements?
its rhythmic method (language) and interpretation in performance.

He mentions (elsewhere) how his synaesthesia was inducted by starvation.

It includes a short explanation of each movement
in relation to the Book of Revelations (Ch 10)

The original piano had some inoperative silent notes
and the cello had only three strings

Some CD notes tell you the original personnel -
Henri Akoka (cl) Ettienne Pasquier (vc) Jean Le Boulaire (vn)
There is a stereo LP recording of QET with the composer
and the original cellist (Musidisque RC 719)
that suffers from a very poor acoustic.

5,000 people attended the first performance in Stalag VIII.
Messiaen said afterwards that he had never been listened
to with such attention and understanding.
