I began on a very open O"Brien Crystal when I was in high school and
progressed to a Vandoren B45, then to my Hites, that I had refaced three
times to accomodate successive treatments with orthodontics and finally
surgery to level and reposition my lower jaw to its current position. I am
now playing on fairly close Greg Smith mouthpieces that compliment my new
face very well. In spite of losing one third of the chondyle on both sides
of my lower jaw, I am able to play pretty well. I have had to learn to
articulate all over though. I'm just grateful to my orthodontist and oral
surgeon, who spent a lot of time watching and hearing me play. They used
those observations to reconstruct my face to facilitate my playing.
