There's an excellent book out on the Quartet. Here's the information for
you from Borders.com

Messiaen: Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps, Cambridge Music Handbks.
Author: Anthony Pople
Trade Paperback, 128 Pages, Cambridge University Press, August 1998
ISBN: 0521585384
Price: $12.76

It contains the history of the Quartet and many quotations from Messiaen
about the piece and the circumstances surrounding the piece. Also, there
are many valuable and relevant performance suggestions, analyses, and
commentaries on the composers musical language.

You may also try a book called "The Messiaen Companion" which has a lot of
information on his compositional practices with many references to
Messiaen's various influences.

Then, of course, there's the preface to the score! Best resource there is,
in my opinion. Good luck with the performance! It's a wonderfully
rewarding piece to play and get inside of.

Best regards,
J. Michael Norsworthy
