I'm playing Olivier Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" next weekend at
Augustana College. I had never done research on him, so the pianist gave me
a couple of articles to read. One was from "The Messiaen Companion, " edited
by Peter Hill, published by Amadeus Press of Portland, Oregon. Sorry - no
copyright date on my copy. The second was a chapter from "Olivier Messiaen"
by Carla Huston Bell, Twayne Publishers, Chris Frigon and Camille Roman,
consulting editors - no other information on the copy. I'll ask her for more
information, if you like. Messiaen himself wrote a lengthy preface which is
included in the score to the piece - unfortunately, I can't read it, because
it's in French. We'll be including the translation in the program, though,
and I look forward to reading it then. Great piece! - LOTS to study, on many
levels!
