Cindy boasted about her children:

<<<Melissa's Mozart Quintet got 23,6 points (All the kids in her quintet are
11-13 years old). Michael's clarinet solo got 25 points (the only clarinet
all three days to get the full points. He played the Donizetti Study, Etude
Moderne Lento by Jean-Jean and 3 of the 5 Folk Songs by Eric Mandat all from
memory. Playing from memory is not required. Michael's Mozart quintet got 23
points.

23-25 points qualify for going on to the national competition, so we'll be
going to Berlin in June.

So we're tired, but really happy. Thanks for listening to me brag.>>>

Cindy--

Please let me congratulate your kids on the results of their *very* hard
work.

I spent all day yesterday judging a middle school solo & ensemble contest.
While I did indeed get paid for my services, I would have done it for free
-- I had a terrific time watching all of those well-scrubbed kids working so
hard. I've not been able to have many private students in the last few
years, and miss teaching -- I jumped at the opportunity. I enjoyed myself
immensely.

A couple of kids, however, depressed me.

Each kid was given 10 minutes -- more than enough for a sixth grader to play
their 2 minute piece and get a little positive coaching. My last kid of the
day took some extra time -- he came prepared to play the second AND third
movements of Weber's first concerto. I was holding my head at the
anticipated butchery -- he is only 13 -- but was floored by the performance.
I hope this kid had a building permit, because he absolutely nailed it.

The deja vu part was that the kid's teacher -- a fine clarinet teacher here
in town by the name of Lylburn Layer -- judged *my* performance of the same
piece when I was a junior in high school. Sitting next to him, judging
*his* student was a blast from the past.

Brent was not alone. His friend Benny (also 13, I think) nailed a Jeanjean
solo about an hour earlier.

. . . which led to my mild depression. These kids are so darn good I won't
get any more gigs -- at least as soon as they learn to drive!
