Subj: [kl] State competition in Germany
Date: Sun, 2 Apr 2000 17:59:12 -0400

Hi,

My husband, three children and I just got back from the last of three days
of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg youth music competition-(Jugend
musiziert) in Wehr (Black Forest area in Germany). We are very happy with
the results.

The participants are all rated according to age category and instruments.
This year, there was also a special new category where my 12 yr. daughter
Melissa and 19 yr. son Michael each played the Mozart Clarinet Quintet, each
in his/her own age category so they weren't competing against each other of
course.
Each participant or group is given points.
25-23.0 points: first prize and goes on to national competition in June.
21.9-21.0 points: first prize, not going on
20.9-16.0 points: second prize
15.9-11.0 points: third prize
10.9-1.0 points: no prize

There are also particular requirements according to category. For the
special category, they had to play an entire work chosen from a list and
were each given 30 minutes. Both my daughter and son played the Mozart
Clarinet Quintet. For the solo clarinet category, my son was required to
play between 15-20 minutes, works from three different styles including a
20th-century work and a slow piece. Michael chose to do something very
daring by playing three solo pieces (no piano accompanying him in any of the
pieces). It may be the first time that has ever been done. For each
category, there was a panel of judges: professionals from various music
schools, academies, and/or orchestras around this area. For the special
category, there were 10 judges. Solo clarinet category had 7.

Melissa's Mozart Quintet got 23,6 points (All the kids in her quintet are
11-13 years old).
Michael's clarinet solo got 25 points (the only clarinet all three days to
get the full points. He played the Donizetti Study, Etude Moderne Lento by
Jean-Jean and 3 of the 5 Folk Songs by Eric Mandat all from memory. Playing
from memory is not required.)
Michael's Mozart quintet got 23 points.

23-25 points qualify for going on to the national competition, so we'll be
going to Berlin in June.

My husband was the head judge for saxophones all three days so he wasn't
able to hear the kids play but I heard everything.

If you'd like to look at an official list of everyone, you can see it on the
internet: http://www.landesmusikrat-bw.de
Melissa is the very first name on the list.

So we're tired, but really happy. Thanks for listening to me brag.

Cindy in Germany
