Close facings, not an altogether foreign Idea. I can't
play on one but if you look at the Selmer Paris “HS”
clarinet m/p, it is a close facing .. and was the
mouthpiece of choice for Alexander Selmer, who played
with the New York Philharmonic under the great
conductor Gustav Mahler. “HS” standing for Henri
Selmer, his brother. People wanted a little more open
mouthpiece, so Henri opened it up and added the star
“HS*” …. For those jazz buffs in the US at the time,
he opened it even further and added two more stars
“HS**”. I acctualy own an original Selmer Metal
clarinet mouthpiece stamped “HS”. Unplayable for me
so I had it opened up and now play it for fun.
