Hello Gaku,
You are going to enjoy Mahler 9! We just
finished performing it for an NMSO subscription.
The second performance was definitely one
of the highlights of the decade.
My understanding of the clarinet parts is that
(like Prokofiev and others) they were written for
instruments with low Eb's. The players in NMSO
switched to A for those passages and back to
Bb as soon as possible.
The Eb clarinet part was a blast. A couple
of exposed entrances where intonation was
critical, but still fun!
