Pads are made of felt with a cardboard backing and a membrane covering. If
the membrane is broken or seriously fraying on the edge, it's time to
replace. Some other conditions may also call for replacement, such as a
seat in the pad which has become too deep from use. Someone suggested the
test of taking each section, holding the keys closed and covering the end
and blowing into it. This works well, but if you blow too hard, some keys
held shut only with spring tension may lift and give a false indication.
If instead of, or in addition to, blowing, you SUCK on the end and see if
it holds a vacuum, it can give a better indication.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
