Subj: [kl] Sharon Kam In Basel
Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 02:53:28 -0500

Back in November, I saw an add for a concert by Sharon Kam. I have heard her
a few times on the German "Classik Radio" station and really liked her
sound. The concert was to include the Debussy Rhapsodie and a Schumann
Fantasiestucke. So I rushed off and bought tickets.

The concert was last Thursday and the Rhapsodie was great but the Schumann
was replaced with the Rossini Theme and Variations. This may be a fun piece
but it was a great disappointment for me. It certainly did not show off the
beautiful tone and phrasing that I was looking for. In addition the
orchestra was not exactly with her.

Interesting too that in spite of quite good applause (Basel can be a bit
restrained) she declined to do an encore.

All in all not one of the great musical events of the year.

Incidentally for those who don't know it, Basel has a tradition of good
concerts and well known soloists.
