I must add my two cents and agree with Dee Hays (and others?) regarding =
the Rubank Method...I am using it as the basis for my teaching. It is =
what I started with in the 3rd grade band program in NY State-mid =
1960s-have no idea what they are doing now, as I am in Oregon. I am =
currently studying with the principal clarinetist of our local symphony, =
and during my first lessons with him, like Dee after a 24 year hiatus, =
he commented that someone had to have taught me the right stuff in the =
beginning, and that I must have been playing at a very high level when I =
quit, in order to just pick up the horn after all those years and be =
able to get into the difficult Jean-Jean, Kroepsch, Hite, Klose and =
Hamelin methods that he started me in. (I too am achieving honors in =
local community musical organizations. I stopped playing after two =
years of music ed./major in clarinet 24 years ago, and began playing =
again just a year ago.)=20

I credit in a large part the Rubank method for my early training, as I =
had no private lessons at that time, just the band program, and spent a =
lot of time just playing from these books on my own. It is readily =
available and very thorough for beginners. Can be a little boring, so I =
agree that it should be supplemented with more melodic materials.
