For my own 2 cent's worth - I have to agree that Rubank produces some good
lesson books, but I find that for my beginners it seems to jump pretty
quickly into the upper range - I usually start most beginners with the
Progressive series - and I'm not terribly pleased with that either - lots of
photographs, and drags on with repititious one note exercises with each new
note introduced. Rubank has advanced books that have some really nice
collections of duets and melodic exercises or etudes. I'd like to see a new
series with more focus on real songs that develope with range - and I find
it unfortunate that copyright laws inhibit use of newer, more popular songs
that kids would enjoy as they learn. Don't know if my contribution helps
any, but I'm still exploring beginner materials - don't think there's one
single book or series that covers all the needs. A lot depends on the
student's interests and abilities - but anything that gets them interested
and practicing is worth the bucks.
